Vetiver is a tall, spiky, perennial herb with slender leaves and a white, branching, complex lacy root system. It is mainly cultivated in tropical regions such as India, Tahiti, Java and Haiti. In Calcutta (a port city in northeastern India) and Haiti, the grass is used to build thatched houses and to make awnings and parasols. In Java, its roots are used to weave MATS and build thatched houses, which not only give the room an elegant scent, but also ward off insects. It is a common ingredient in soaps, cosmetics and perfumes. Vetiver oil is also known as the "oil of peace" because it has a good calming effect.
